Typical high fantasies are rich with magic and royal monuments like castles and quaint medieval villages, but I believe it's due time for this genre to hit its industrial resolution. Where tight knit families split and the monster in the woods fades into the gnashing teeth of gears.
Old traditions died in favor of new ones, and those left on the fringes of a rapidly changing world grow desperate to grasp at relevance. At substance and meaning... Artisans dedicated their lives to handicrafts, metallurgy, and more and for what? To see it fall to the way side?
Those who resisted the change diminished with their demand, for what would take the carpenter a year to lovingly create, was out raced and sorely underpaid. The things that gave meaning to the lives of these people turned on its head, leaving an empty husk of the life, energy, and care that once was.
Which begs the question?
Would the knight in shining armor save the princess if he knew she was a lie meant to die? Equally, if the world fell apart would the maintenance man bother to fix it? When uncertainty becomes normalcy where do you turn?
